Join us TONIGHT at the Common Market in South End for a screening of I Heart Huckabees, a 1994 comedy where a husband-and-wife team play two detectives, helping others solve their existential issues with “universal interconnectivity.” The film stars Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Isabelle Huppert, Mark Wahlberg and Naomi Watts.

The screening starts at night fall on the outdoor patio of the Common Market South. Bring your own lawn chair if you like, bring a friend, bring a date, but most importantly, ride a bike! See you there.

Sierra Club to host former Executive Director

Make plans to join the Sierra Club on Wednesday, August 22, as they welcome Martin Zimmerman, former Executive Director of CABA, for a presentation and discussion about “Bicycling, sustainability and culture change – – – – a path to radically reduce Char-Meck’s carbon footprint “. 

The meeting starts off at 6:30 PM for pizza, refreshments and a chance to meet and socialize with other Sierra Club members and friends. The business meeting and program will begin at 7:00 PM. Non-members and potential new members are very welcome!

Central Piedmont Sierra Club meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm (unless noted in an announcement) in the Mahlon Adams Pavilion at Freedom Park, 2435 Cumberland Avenue, Charlotte, NC, 28203. Cumberland Avenue is off of the 1500 block of East Boulevard.

The program is free and open to the public and you do not have to be a member to attend. Free parking is available.


CABA is Reaching Out to Charlotte’s Religious Community

Charlotte Area Bicycle Alliance Board Member, Jon Harding, will be giving a talk on transportation cycling and his experience replacing car miles with active transportation.  This talk will be part of the religious services at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte this Sunday, August 19th.  Also speaking will be June Blotnick, Executive Director of Clean Air Carolina, who will address the Charlotte community’s air quality and her calling to become a caretaker for our air.  The UU Church of Charlotte is a welcoming church and has invited the cycling community to attend these services.  If you can, please ride your bike so we may fill up the UUCC’s bike rack.  Services will be this Sunday, August 19th at 9:15AM and 11:15AM, and casual dress is welcome.  The Uniterian Universalist Church of Charlotte is located at 234 North Sharon Amity Road in Charlotte just off CDOT’s bicycle route #9.

Welcome Haley Beaupre to the CABA Board of Directors!

We are pleased to announce that Haley Beaupre has joined the Board of Directors and will assume the Secretary position.   Haley grew up in Minneapolis area, where she learned to love riding around the lakes, and attended the University of Notre Dame, where she learned to love riding among the corn fields.  Haley moved to Charlotte in 2010 and now works as an analyst at Bank of America.  In addition to the CABA board, Haley is currently also on the city’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC).  We are looking forward to her experience and energy.  Please join us in welcoming Haley into her new role.

Bike-In Movie at South End Common Market

June 20, around 7 pm, “Stars and Watercarriers”

The documentary Stars and Watercarriers shows awesome footage of the 1973 Giro d’Italia, starring Eddy Merckx! Classic stuff, kids. Break out your vintage 10 speed, pack a baguette and some cheese and buy a bottle of wine from the friendly CM concession stand, then lay out your picnic blanket and take it all in…There’s some really drama to be seen here.

In and around Charlotte

  • Gala ribbon-cutting ceremony for S. Tryon bike lanesBike lanes are now in place at the I-277 /  S.Tryon overpass – Thank you to city engineering and  planning staff, including engineer and cyclist Joe Frey, for making this project a reality.  The ceremony will be on June 19 at 10 a.m. at the site. Open to the public. Bring your  bike !
  • Congrats to UNCC students  – Ray Atkinson is a loyal CABA member and a leading bicycle advocate  on  the UNCC campus. Ray recently was awarded a summer scholarship to study bicycling in major European cities. Ray leaves  on June 20. His trip will overlap with a similar scholarship tour by urban design graduate student and CABA member, Keihly Moore.
