CHARLOTTE RIDE OF SILENCE

May 12, 2008

Sponsored by the MoJo’s

May 21 7 p.m. Booty Loop –This 2nd annual ride is sponsored by the MoJo riding club of Charlotte.Last year we had about 100 riders. Three laps in silence, or about 45 minutes. On May 21, 2008, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe (200+ locations). Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. While we will be riding in honor of all cyclists, we will hold a special place in our hearts for local cyclists and friends Todd Weaver who died on a collision with a CATS bus while commuting, and Rachel Giblin and Lee Ann Barry who were killed while on a charity rides. Thank You’s to All

Thanks to the Dirt Divas, the Rank Riders, Mark Weaver, the Amy Broome band and so many others who pitched in for the third annual Citywide festival which took place last Saturday promoting a friendly and safer environment for bicycle transportation in the Queen City. This exciting event was for people of all ages and skill levels with a police supported 3-mile family ride thru Uptown Charlotte and 10 and 25 mile rides through some of Charlotte’s most beautiful neighborhoods. After the rides, there was as much food as people could eat, live entertainment and other activities for all to enjoy. 50% of all proceeds will go to CABA progam efforts in education and safety again this year.

The Mayor’s annual bike ride held the first Friday of BIKE ! Charlotte was a huge success with a big crowd and of course Mayor Pat McCrory who took time off from his statewide Governor’s campaign to roll up his sleeves and ride to work ! Special thanks to Ken Tippette and CDOT staff and Neal Boyd for their hard work again this year. This year marked the 8th annual BIKE! Charlotte series of events to bring the benefits of cycling to the greater community.

Wachovia Championship GOLF Bike Valet Service

May 9, 2008

A Success

Thanks to Weldon Weaver and Board of Advisor member Margie Orell and others who volunteered on a (hot!) sunny day on May 3 at Quail Hollow Country Club. We parked over 220 bikes, garnered some new members and friends, were treated to free food and a chance to watch some of the Championship close-up. A win - win for all concerned. We hope word will spread so that next year we are invited back, possibly for a fee. We also have our sights set on the Panthers.

Here is an email sent by a happy customer to the Championship staff - -

“Greg and I recently volunteered to work at the Wachovia Tournament at Quail Hollow which is not far from our home.. We decided to ride our bikes to and from our shifts. We found a bike rack lot near the entrance which was manned by members of Charlotte Area Bike Alliance. They helped us lock up our bikes and registered our names with our bikes. At the end of the day when we showed up to retrieve our bikes we found a note on one of them informing us that we had a blow-out shortly after arriving. They fixed our bike for free and just asked that we would spread the word about their organization and suggest becoming members. We are grateful for the presence of CABA at the tournament and believe they provide a important service to volunteers and spectators alike.. Supporting bike riders shows again Wachovia’s interest in “green” methods of “doing no harm” to the environment during the tournament. I suggest you do what you can to continue CABA assistance at future tournaments. We’re looking forward to it! “ - Greg & Anita Brandner.

APRIL ROAD SKILLS CLASS A SUCCESS

May 9, 2008

Riding Safely and With Confidence

Thanks to Ed Moyers and others who worked his fanny off making this happen. And to Mike Duralia for an outstanding teaching job. This League of American Bicyclists certified course teaches cyclists how to better operate safely, effectively and confidently on city streets. Topics include: legal rights and responsibilities, road safety practices, checklist of road danger zones, how to outfit yourself and your bike, etc.

This course was identical to the one successfully offered at Dowd YMCA last summer by John Ciccarelli. CABA hopes to offer it again in the Fall, and possibly make it a permanent program for the general public. Overcoming the fear of riding on streets is one of the most important obstacles to overcome – specifically in Charlotte’s bicycle un-friendly street system.
